DB Radfix is a service from Deutsche Bahn that offers same-day bike repair service at train stations in Germany.

My role

Mobile and Desktop UI Design, Website Design, built a UI Style Guide, and designed the product from zero.

Credits & Info

This was a work collaboration with bitcrowd, a Berlin software development agency, in which I was the lead designer. The product is live and available to view here.

Deutsche Bahn is a German national railway company that wanted to offer their passengers the ability to repair their bikes at the train station while commuting to work. By dropping off their bike in the morning, the customer is guaranteed same-day repair service, the best local mechanic work, and a contactless experience.

DB Radfix is an in-app browser that allows booking a personal service bike repair online from anywhere. Making the experience of repairing a bike, time-saving and hassle-free. Where to go? When to do it? How much does it cost?… All the questions are quickly answered in a few minutes with DB Radix App.

When & Where.
The booking process.

Since this is an in-app browser, like Facebook or Twitter, initiating the booking process is easy and fast. By accessing the Radfix website, a list of available train stations to choose from is shown. And that is the first step. “Where can I fix my bike?” Followed by “When". To ensure the bike is repaired on the same day, the bike needs to be dropped off early in the morning. So the time is set by default and all there is to decide is the day.

Service selection and budget for unforseen issues

Once the location and time are defined, a list of available services is shown with prices. The services are organised by either bike check-up packages or different parts of the bike (wheels, chain, gears, brakes…) making the selection the booking as easy as possible. To ensure that trust is established, more details about the work process for each service, are visible when expanding each section.

The “Extra Budget” step ensures that the mechanic can proceed with his work if an unforeseen issue comes up, without requiring to wait for the client’s permission, and therefore making sure the bike is repaired on the same day. This is only used if really necessary and therefore is highlighted differently in the Order Summary.

Bike drop-off instructions

Once the booking is made, instructions on how to drop off the bike correctly are sent by email.
A personal parking number and locker are assigned to the order, so the mechanic knows to who the bike belongs.
There are a few steps to follow to ensure the bike is safe and only accessible by the owner and the mechanic.

UI Style Guide

Deutsche Bahn is a well-established company with solid brand guidelines. Although there are a few variations from all the products, certain elements were followed strictly by the book, such as fonts, colors, and icons.

All the new UI elements and components created specifically for Radfix were documented in a UI style guide, which can be re-used for later iterations and overall design documentation.
